DDR4 RAM / Memory

DDR4 RAM: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB Memory for Gaming, Work and Everyday Use

DDR4 RAM remains one of the most widely used memory standards in Australia, compatible with a huge range of Intel and AMD platforms....

Whether you’re looking to buy DDR4 RAM for an AM4 platform, upgrade a laptop, or boost an existing home or office PC, JW Computers has the right kit. We stock DDR4 RAM in 8GB, DDR4 RAM 16GB, DDR4 32GB RAM and DDR4 64GB capacities across a range of speeds including DDR4 3200 and DDR4 3600.

Whether you’re searching for 32GB RAM DDR4 or 64GB DDR4 RAM, we’ve got it in stock.

How to Choose the Right DDR4 RAM

If you are unsure what memory to purchase, look up the specifications of your motherboard. This information will tell you what is compatible with your system. Look for:

  • Maximum amount (e.g. 32GB max)
  • Maximum speed (e.g. 3200 MHz - no point buying anything faster than your board supports)
  • Number of slots (e.g. 4 slots)
  • RAM type (DDR4 SDRAM - not compatible with DDR3 or DDR5 slots; the notch position differs between generations)

Using this information, purchase memory that is suitable for your system without wasting money on unnecessary specifications.

DDR4 laptop RAM is also available in SODIMM form factor for notebook upgrades. If you’re upgrading a laptop, make sure you select SODIMM DDR4 rather than full-size desktop DIMM - they are different physical sizes and not interchangeable.

DDR4 for Gaming vs Everyday Use

Gamers should look to obtain the fastest RAM possible (at least 2133 MHz, with over 3000 MHz better suited to high-end rigs). The speed of RAM can be set in the BIOS. We’ve found fast RAM to increase the minimum fps by quite a lot.

For gaming builds on AM4 (Ryzen 5000 series) or LGA1700 with DDR4 support, DDR4 3200 MHz is the practical sweet spot. 32GB DDR4 RAM is the recommended amount for modern gaming, giving you room to run the game and background applications without slowdown. If you have a Ryzen build, DDR4 3600 MHz is also worth considering as it aligns well with the Infinity Fabric clock speed.

For people simply upgrading their home or office computer or laptop, you don’t need to worry too much about speed, just the maximum amount.

FAQs

  • How much DDR4 RAM do I need for gaming?

16GB DDR4 RAM handles most current titles comfortably and is the minimum for modern gaming. 32GB RAM DDR4 gives you headroom for demanding games, background apps and multitasking. Unless you're doing video editing or running virtual machines alongside gaming, DDR4 RAM 64GB is rarely necessary for a gaming-only build.

  • What DDR4 RAM speed should I buy?

DDR4 speed depends on your platform and use case:

    • DDR4 2133 MHz: base JEDEC spec, works in any DDR4 system but leaves performance on the table
    • DDR4 3200 MHz (DDR4 3200): best value speed for gaming on AM4 and most Intel platforms
    • DDR4 3600 MHz: popular with AMD Ryzen builds where the Infinity Fabric runs well at this speed
    • DDR4 4000 MHz and above: enthusiast overclocking territory - check your board's support before buying

Always enable XMP in BIOS to run your RAM DDR4 at its rated speed rather than the default base frequency.

  • Is DDR4 RAM still worth buying?

Yes, for systems that already use it. DDR4 platforms like AMD AM4 (Ryzen 5000) and many Intel 12th and 13th Gen boards are still widely used. Adding RAM to an existing system is a cost-effective upgrade that doesn't require a new board or CPU. If you're building from scratch on a newer platform, check whether your board supports DDR4 or DDR5 - many boards give you the choice.

  • What is the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 RAM?

DDR5 offers higher speeds, greater capacity per stick and improved power efficiency, but requires a DDR5-compatible motherboard. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable - they use different physical slots, and the difference is easy to spot. DDR4 uses a different notch position to DDR5. If your board supports DDR4, you need DDR4. If you're building new on AMD AM5 or a DDR5 Intel board, DDR5 is the better long-term choice.

  • What is SODIMM DDR4 RAM and when do I need it?

SODIMM is the smaller form factor used in laptops, mini PCs and some compact desktops. If you're upgrading RAM in a laptop, you need DDR4 SODIMM (sometimes called DDR4 laptop RAM), not a desktop DIMM. Key differences:

    • Desktop: full-size DIMM (133mm long)
    • Laptop and mini PC: SODIMM (67mm long)
    • Some all-in-one PCs use SODIMM too - check your model's specs to confirm
  • Can I buy 8GB DDR4 RAM at JW Computers?

Yes. We stock 8GB DDR4 RAM (also commonly searched as DDR4 8GB, DD4 RAM or DDR 4 RAM) for budget builds and single-slot upgrades, as well as 16GB DDR4, 32GB DDR4 RAM and 64GB DDR4 RAM kits. If you're not sure whether to buy a single 8GB DDR4 stick or a dual-channel 2x8GB kit, dual-channel is almost always the better choice for performance. Our team can advise on the best configuration for your board.

  • How do I install DDR4 RAM?

Power down and unplug your PC. DDR4 DIMMs only insert one way - the notch aligns with the key in the slot. For dual-channel mode, install in the slots your motherboard manual recommends (usually slots 2 and 4 if you have four). Press down firmly until both retention clips click. Boot up and enable XMP in BIOS to run the DDR4 at its rated speed rather than the default base frequency.
